Scientific BackgroundThe matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a large family of zinc endopeptidases. All MMPs are synthesized as inactive proenzymes. The activation of these proenzymes is a critical step that leads to degradation of extracellular matrix components such as fibronectin and collagen type III. MMP2 is activated by other MMPs such as MMP14 and MMP16. MMP2 is known to degrade collagen types IV, V, VII and X as well as gelatin type I.
Western blot analysis of MMP2 protein loaded at 1 ng. The antibody was used at 0.5 µg/mL with overnight incubation at 4°C. A specific band is detected for MMP2 at the expected molecular weight of ~72 kD.
