Scientific BackgroundChoriogonadotropin (CG) is a glycoprotein hormone. CG is produced by the trophoblastic cells of the placenta in the first trimester and it stimulates the ovaries to synthesize the steroids needed to maintain pregnancy. CG is a heterodimer consisting of a common alpha subunit and an unique beta subunit which confers biological specificity to thyrotropin, lutropin, follitropin and gonadotropin.
