Scientific BackgroundSpectrin is a major component of the cytoskeletal superstructure of the erythrocyte plasma membrane. Spectrin is composed of non-homologous alpha and beta chains which aggregate to form dimers, tetramers and higher polymers. Multiple isoforms of alpha and beta chains are produced by alternative splicing.
