- Scientific Background The glucagon preproprotein is cleaved into a number of distinct peptides that include glucagon, glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) and glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2). Glucagon has a key role in glucose metabolism and homeostasis. The release of glucagon is stimulated by hypoglycemia and regulates the level of blood glucose by increasing gluconeogenesis and decreasing glycolysis.
