  • Scientific Background Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) is a member of the RUNX family of transcription factors. RUNX2 has an Runt domain and can bind DNA both as a monomer or as a subunit of a heterodimeric complex. RUNX2 has a role in osteoblastic differentiation and skeletal morphogenesis and is essential for the maturation of osteoblasts and both intramembranous and endochondral ossification. RUNX2 is specifically expressed in the nucleus of osteoblasts. At least 3 isoforms are produced by alternative splicing.
